When I was little, our neighbors had a hive that decided to split and swarmed our back yard. There were so many bees in our yard, it was hard to decide to step outside. Of course, we had hired a company to re-roof our house. Between accidentally falling through our roof, and working in 100 degree weather as thousands of bees flew around... they didn't have a lot of fun.

Just got to say your article on Makezine.com was just awesome. Funny smart and also a great read. A bunch of my friends at the office read it with me and loved the way you wrote this.

Pictures were great also thanks for an awesome read.

Hey amazing photos! You capture the subtle tension of queen hunting as well as the tease of all those beautiful bee bodies.

Chris

Thanks, it was even more fun than we thought it would be (even with the sting and the .... ear incident of '08). It's a cool hobby but I don't think I could do it myself. I *wil*l take some of Jason's honey though. :)

OMG, that was a great story and I enjoyed reading also. Here I am sitting in a class and trying not to laugh out loud.

My friend Rick sent me your link b/c we recently talked about keeping bees. My husband kept bees and produced honey years ago and now we have two hives in our backyard in Seguin, Texas, just for fun and pollen (allergies are bad and I'm willing to try anything!).

I was just going to post about bees today and now I am even more inspired to do so. Have a great day.

Awesome story, and really details the perils of returning to pre-industrial revolution artisanality. I made that last word up.
